WHY IS READING AT HOME SO IMPORTANT?
Brain Development
Starting from birth, reading with your child lays the foundation for successful learning, significantly enhancing brain development and preparing them for school.
Advanced Vocabulary
A child who is read one book a day hears 300,000 more words than a child who is not read to; 5 books a day the child hears 1,400,000 more words.
Foreign Language
When a child is exposed to reading at a very early age, the brain develops a lifelong capacity to learn language, even a foreign language (Nelson, 2000).
Increased Imagination
Reading transports children to new worlds, introducing them to diverse people, places, and events, broading their perspectives.
Our Impact
“According to the South Carolina 2021 Report Card, 57% of students enter kindergarten deemed “not ready”, and less than half of third graders can read at grade level. Further, 14.8% of those 18 to 24 years of age have not completed high school. By working together to improve literacy outcomes, communities can increase the number of students who are kindergarten ready, who read on grade level by the third grade, and who graduate from high school. Our community is doing its part as we implement the Books in Every Bag program."

Enroll Your Children
Children, from birth to age five, enrolled in our program receive a FREE quality book every month mailed to them at home. Each book is specially chosen for your child’s age and level of development – and because it’s fun to read!
Fill out and return the registration form attached. We mail a different book for each age, so please be sure to register EVERY CHILD UNDER FIVE in your family.
Support Books in Every Bag
Books in Every Bag is FREE in participating communities. The program is supported through donations in your local area from neighbors, civic groups, businesses, schools, churches, and local organizations and YOU.
